A BRIEF HISTORY
When William Bayliss and Ernest Starling were studying how the nervous system controls the process of digestion in the early 1900’s, their work led them to one of the first hormones ever discovered.
Secretin – then categorized as a ‘chemical messenger’ – was identified by Bayliss and Starling in 1902. Since its discovery, it took more than 60 years until the human secretin precursor gene (SCT) peptide was isolated and characterized. Secretin was first purified from the porcine intestine and was found to be a basic 27-amino acid peptide.
Purified synthetic human secretin became available as an intravenous injection under the market name ChiRhoStim ® in the U.S. in 2004. It contains an amino acid sequence identical to the naturally occurring hormone consisting of 27 amino acids.
ChiRhoStim ® Synthetic Human Secretin for Injection is readily available and offers a plethora of applications.
