Summer Success
Summer break is finally here! Earlier this month, Camp Hope held their annual pancreatic special needs sleepaway camp. We’re proud to support The National Pancreas Foundation and Rebecca’s Wish teaming up to put on a camp offering children with otherwise debilitating pancreatic conditions a chance at the freedom and joy of summer camp, all at no cost to the parents.

“For many campers, attending a week-long overnight camp would not otherwise be possible due to the complexities of their medical conditions. Camp Hope removes that barrier by providing a fully staffed on-site medical center, allowing campers to safely participate in every aspect of camp while receiving support for medications, diabetes management, nutrition needs, mental health check-ins, and other healthcare concerns,” describes The NPF.
Taking place at Morgan’s Camp, an ultra-accessible adventure park in San Antonio, TX, campers have access to a unique space where everyone can participate. From zip lining to laser tag to archery and horseback riding, Camp Hope is an escape from the daily hassle of pancreatic disease.

It provides an escape from worry too, as needing medical devices won’t stop the fun – campers are regularly seen using IV drips, crutches, and wheelchairs while taking equal part in the memory making. With every camper experiencing some form of pancreatic disease, Camp Hope offers a place and sense of normalcy. “Sending our children to camp with a long list of medications and diabetes care needs that we are still learning to navigate was not easy. It was reassuring to know that two of their doctors were there, helping oversee their care and giving us peace of mind,” said Michelle Bicknase of Minnesota. “Camp Hope was an incredible experience for my boys, Carson (8) and Blake (12). They had the opportunity to connect with other children who have faced similar challenges and finally talk with peers who truly understand what they’ve been through. They had so much fun meeting friends and doing activities they were not ready to come home!”

Interested in supporting Hope? You can make a difference alongside ChiRhoClin with donations of time or money. Not only does this make an impact in children’s lives, but it can make a difference in your life too. “Five years ago, I arrived at Camp Hope as a nurse volunteer eager to help children living with pediatric pancreatitis and post-TPIAT. What I didn’t realize was how much these incredible campers would impact my own life,” said Christie Heinzman, DNP, of Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “Each summer, I have the privilege of caring for some of the strongest, bravest, and most resilient children I have ever met. Camp Hope has continually reminded me why I chose this profession.”

Looking forward in the summer season, ChiRhoClin is gearing up to attend PancreasFest from July 22-24 in Minneapolis. As we venture round the convention hall, feel free to stop us and ask any questions you may have. We are always interested in connecting, listening to your ideas, and supporting them however best we can. As highlighted last month, there are several grand advancements in the pancreatic disease field as of late. Whether it be gene sequencing, customized vaccines, or anything in between, we want to hear your ideas.
